Fountains of Youth

With public pools closed, but the heat of summer still lingering, there’s nothing more refreshing than a run through the newly opened Town Lake Park fountains. Babies, toddlers, and big kids love to jump, run, and attempt to “catch” shooting water that sprays up out of the jets. The fountain area is semi-enclosed by new trees and granite walls. The base of each wall contains a small wading pool that makes a great splashing area for little crawlers. The park also includes an open meadow area (adjacent to the Palmer Event Center), a trail around a decorative pond, and a sidewalk labyrinth that leads up to an observation hill which is topped with a big in-ground stone map of Texas. One thing to note, there is not much shade so apply sunscreen and pack a snack, the kiddos will want to stay a while! Directions: Take South Lamar, turn left (east) on Barton Springs, and left onto Dawson. Park in the lot by the grassy hills (you will drive into the Dougherty Arts Center parking area). Clean public restrooms are available.

Birth is a play based on over one hundred interviews Karen Brody conducted with mothers across America who gave birth between 2000-2004. It tells the true stories of 8 women painting a portrait of how low-risk, educated women are giving birth in America today. Moving between first-person monologues, some dialogue, and the voices these women heard on the day they gave birth, Birth confronts, what City Lights Theater Company has called, "The naked truth about childbirth in America." Public performances benefiting Texans for Midwifery-Austin Birth On Labor Day is a global movement to make maternity care mother-friendly by raising awareness of maternity care issues, raising money for organizations working to make maternity care mother friendly, and validating mothers' birth experiences in all communities world wide, through the use of the arts.
