Music to My Ears

The pre-school bell has rung and families are planning their summer outings. There is always one fantastic summer performance series that is a big draw for Austin parents and their kids. Every June and July, the Austin Symphony presents Children’s Day Art Park. This summer program, orchestrated by many volunteers, combines dance, drama, and music. It enriches and entertains young guests with the magic of the performing arts. The summer program features local kid-friendly musicians, dancers, storytellers, magicians, mimes, and crafts people.
Every Wednesday morning starting June 11th-July 30th, parents and children converge at Symphony Square from 9:30-11:30 to hear the featured entertainers of the week. Families sit in old traditional, stadium-style seating while performers entertain across the small canal on a stage in front of a tall wall. Kids jump to their feet to see the entertainer of the day, and usually stay wide-eyed and standing throughout the entire performance. Another fun activity includes an instrument demo area, where kids can see, touch and play the instruments. Just when you think the show is over, stroll on down the block to the art tent for “nickel” lemonades, arts and crafts, and face painting. Get there early for a parking spot and a good stone-bench seat. Pack snacks, sunscreen, and drinks. Don’t forget the cameras. The best part of Children’s Day Art Park is the cost is 50 cents and adults are free, when accompanied by a child.
