Mothers of Preschoolers: On the Job Training?
Do you ever wonder how you signed up for motherhood without any training? College helped prepare you for the “real world”, one or two birthing classes for the delivery, but what about the day-to-day duties of motherhood?
Why not join other moms for food, fun and a little fellowship at your local MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group. MOPS supports mothering, through its focus, speakers, mentor moms and small groups. The MOPS slogan is “Because Mothering Matters”. Sometimes it’s hard to see the rewards of endless diaper changes, sleepless nights and having to watch The Wiggles on a daily basis. Mothering is a tough job, but MOPS reminds you that it’s also the most important job you’ll ever have.
Twice a month, moms meet in 16 local churches around Austin—from Spicewood to Cedar Park. Although MOPS is a Christian organization, all moms are welcome, regardless of religion or membership at a church. Breakfast (or a snack) is served, followed by a speaker on topics from nutrition and finances to marriage and parenting. Moms are divided into smaller groups of 6-8 women, with a “mentor” mom providing hope that you’ll survive the preschool years. Discussion and a craft round out the morning. Children attend “Moppets” childcare during the meetings, so you have time to really talk with other moms. To learn more, check out www.mops.org.
Motherhood is an amazing journey—but don’t go it alone. Join other moms at a local MOPS group
for support, encouragement, and a little help with on the job training.

DOT COM OF THE WEEK

BSA’s dot-com of the week: www.campzoom.com
After realizing there was not a "one-stop-shop" for summer camps, two local moms, Sarah and Michele, created
www.CampZoom.com.
This new, comprehensive on-line resource for Austin families includes a searchable day camp directory where parents can choose from over 25 criteria. Moms and Dads can quickly and easily find camps that fit their children’s interests, needs and schedule. CZ members (it's free to join) can also register their child for several camps at one time by following the easy application process. Although CampZoom already offers an extensive list of day camps, the directory is being updated daily as camps finalize their schedules for the summer. The site also encourages parents to send feedback and review programs. Other features include information on extracurricular programs, private instructors, away camps, private schools, and local area events.
