History

Baby Scoop Austin, founded by Alissa O’Bannon, started taking root shortly after Alissa’s first child, Olivia, was born in January 2005. After the elation of having a beautiful bundle of joy started to fade and the sleep deprivation and constant crying settled in, Alissa was feeling overwhelmed. Her saving grace came in the form of five other Mommies in the same situation. A girlfriend invited Alissa to join five first-time Moms with newborns (all within 6 weeks of each other) for coffee.

A new playgroup was born. The babies were too young to care, but for the moms, it was a weekly therapy session. The women would share stories of sleepless nights, painful nursing episodes, their favorite “go-to” books (i.e. Baby 411 or What to Expect the First Year), where to buy the best nursing bra, and what bottles and pacifiers were best.

As maternity leaves came to an end, the weekly coffee shop talks disappeared, but the moms would constantly e-mail each other with questions, and share information about local story times, best parks for the next play dates or where to catch the next Biscuit Brothers concert. It seemed the Mommies were a powerful network of information and support.

That’s when Alissa realized that there must be other Moms out there that would benefit from this type of support. She wanted to help other women transition into motherhood -- hence, Baby Scoop Austin was conceived.
